Knowledge Base — Upload Prior Art, Disclosures & Previous Responses

Upload prior art references, invention disclosures, and previous office action responses to use as additional context when chatting with AI during patent office action analysis.

Last updated: February 28, 2026

The Knowledge Base lets you upload your own patent prosecution files and use them as additional context in Chat with Documents. This is useful when you need the AI to consider prior art, invention disclosures, or previous office action responses beyond the standard analysis documents.

What You Can Upload

Supported file types include:

  • PDF documents — Prior art references, invention disclosures, previous office action responses, examiner interviews
  • Images — Patent drawings, figures, screenshots (text is extracted automatically)
  • Text files — Notes, patent claim drafts, correspondence with the patent examiner

Uploading Files

  1. Open Chat with Documents from the Workspace section in the sidebar
  2. Click the Knowledge Base icon in the chat header
  3. The Knowledge Base sidebar opens with three tabs:
    • Case Documents — Documents from the current analysis (office action, prior art, strategy, etc.) plus files you upload specifically for this case
    • Uploaded Files — Your personal file collections (knowledge bases) that you can reuse across analyses
    • Shared Files — Files shared with you by collaborators
  4. Click "Upload" (or "Upload File to This Analysis" in Case Documents) to add new files
  5. Files are processed automatically — text is extracted from PDFs and images

Per-Analysis vs. Global Uploads

  • Case Documents — Use "Upload File to This Analysis" in the Case Documents tab to add files that apply only to the current patent analysis. Ideal for case-specific prior art, examiner correspondence, or drafts you don't need in other cases. These appear under "Your Uploads" in that tab.
  • Uploaded Files — Upload to a knowledge base (folder) for files you want to reuse across multiple analyses. Create folders, upload once, and select them in any patent analysis.

Using Files in Chat

Once uploaded, you can include Knowledge Base files as context for your patent prosecution chat conversations:

  1. Open the Knowledge Base sidebar from the chat header
  2. Check the box next to one or more files you want to include
  3. Selected files appear as context tags above your message input
  4. Type your question — the AI will consider the selected files along with any @ mentioned documents

Tip: You can combine Knowledge Base files with @ mentions. For example, mention @Office Action and select a previous office action response from your Knowledge Base to ask: "How should we modify our previous argument in light of the new patent examiner rejection?"

File Processing

When you upload a file, the system extracts its text content for use in chat:

  • PDFs — Text is extracted directly from the patent document
  • Images — Optical character recognition (OCR) and AI vision extract text and descriptions from patent drawings
  • A processing indicator shows the extraction status

Once extraction is complete, the file is ready to use as context for patent prosecution questions.

Managing Files

  • Search — Use the search box in the Knowledge Base sidebar to find specific prior art references or documents
  • Delete — Remove files you no longer need
  • Files persist across sessions and analyses — upload once, use anywhere
